PhIG meeting held 18th February 2019
Attendees: R Evans, M Neilsen, G Moore, J Cavanagh, J Devenish, R Dietrich, G Deutscher, N Arnold, B Parker Apologies:, W Janssen, P Childs Venue: Roger Evans hosted the meeting Technical Topic: As a lead-in to next month’s photo topic ‘Creeks or streams’ his month’s topic was ‘Photographing water’. It is now fashionable to use a longer exposure than normal to provide a photo which shows the water with a glassy look. Two short videos were shown as discussion starters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgWuvNebnsM – ‘Water like glass’ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JepuKlmbzvI&t=6s – ‘River Landscape Photography: How to photograph Moving Water’. In the discussion that followed, most present felt that a normal photo with a fast shutter speed was better than the artistic ‘glassy’ look. Also, the long exposure time required to achieve the glassy look usually requires a neutral density (ND) filter to reduce the light coming into the camera. The photographer in the first video also recommended bracketing to provide a HD photo. Some discussion was held on sites to photograph ‘creeks or streams’ since, with so little rain recently, suitable sites may be difficult to find. Some of the suggestions included: Minamurra falls, Botanical gardens, Mullet creek. Discussion: PhIG programme for 2019: The programme circulated previously lists photo topics up to October and members were generally happy to stay with this programme. As the new convener of the group Brendan will take over from the April meeting and indicated that he will probably stay with the current meeting format although will probably change the emphasis for the technical session. PhIG Blog: The question was asked as to whether the PhIG blog should continue to be maintained. Several people thought that the Blog provides a useful archive for the meetings and should be maintained. Roger said that he would be prepared to keep it up-to-date. Camera vs smart phone comparison: Brendan had carried out a detailed analysis of the photos taken during the workshop session held at the October meeting. In summary he found that:
The overall conclusion was that although a modern DSLR camera still takes a better photo than a smart ‘phone, the difference in quality is marginal. Photo Critique: 9 members submitted short videos (between 1 and 3 minutes long) on a range of subjects Most of the videos have been uploaded to the Probus Vimeo site and are available to download from:
March Meeting (18th March 2019): Robert Bonella will host the March 2019 meeting with the technical topic being a ‘Landscape photography of rocks’ and the Photo topic will be ‘Creeks or streams’ R Evans 18th Feb. 2019 The next PhIG meeting will be hosted by Roger Evans at 42 Natan Place, Cordeaux Heights on Monday 18th February commencing at the usual time of 10:00 am.
Technical session: The topic planned is a Photographing water and I will show a couple of videos on the subject. The March photographic topic is ‘Creeks and streams’ and there are a couple of interesting techniques to photograph water in motion. Discussion topics? Are there any issues someone would like discussed?
This will be our first video session for 2019. Videos should be about 2 minutes in length on any subject but, preferably, in MP4 format I would like to have your videos by Friday 15th Feb. but I recognise that videos are a little bit more difficult to send via e-mail. A 2 min HD video (1920 x 1080 pix) will probably be in the order of 200 MB file size and it might be possible these days to send it as an e-mail attachment (but I haven’t tried). A better alternative would be to load the video onto Vimeo or YouTube. Some time ago John Devenish set up a Vimeo channel (https://vimeo.com/) with the user name of [email protected] and the password 2500wmp2500 and you could load a video to it. You can set the privacy so that the video can only be seen by ‘People I choose’ (but please chose me). Another option is to set up your own YouTube channel by going to: https://www.youtube.com/ and creating an account (it’s free) and then setting the appropriate level of privacy after you upload your video. Failing this you can, of course, bring the video along on a memory stick with the disadvantage of requiring a bit of mucking around at the meeting. Which ever way you chose, can you please let me know if you have a video to show by 15th Feb As at 15th Feb videos have been received from: R Evans, N Arnold, B Parker, R Dietrich, J Devenish, J Cavanagh, M Neilsen, G Moore, G Deutscher March Meeting: The Photo topic is ‘Creeks and Streams |
