The next PhIG meeting will be hosted by Graeme Deutscher on Monday 15th August commencing at 10:00 am. The Agenda will be as follows: Know Your Camera: The camera topic will be: ‘Depth of Field’ : The photo subject for the September meeting (brought forward from the October meeting) is ‘Portraits’. A good portrait picture usually requires that the subject’s face is in perfect focus but the background is out of focus to minimise any distraction. A good portrait therefore requires a small depth of field. Some time ago Claude posted links to a couple of training videos on ‘Depth of Field’ (DoF) and there are plenty of training videos available. The meeting will start with a review with a couple of the better training videos (about 25 mins) followed by a discussion on the topic. Unless there are some other topics members wish to discuss the suggestion is that we use our cameras to apply the results of the DoF session to take some portrait photos of each other at the meeting. Microsoft Pix Demo: Robert Bonella has downloaded the new Microsoft Pix application into his 'phone and will provide a demo of it at the meeting. Future Camera Topics: Possible 'Know your Camera' topics include:
Discussion topic 3: Please suggest a topic Photo Critique: The photo topic will be ‘Darling Harbour Photo Shoot’ where we will critique some of the best photos taken during the photo shoot outing to the Maritime Museum. As you will recall we don’t have a specific subject for this photos shoot and so feel free to photograph anything you think is worth it. For those who don't make it to the Maritime Museum photo shoot feel free to submit any 5 photos you would like critiqued. Could members please e-mail me their 5 photos and I will put them into a PowerPoint presentation to allow us to quickly go backwards and forwards between the photos. Meeting held 18th July in the AIIM Board room - Innovation CampusPresent: R Evans, R Bonella, P Childs, D Connell, K Daniels, G Deutscher, G Moore, M Neilsen, D Warner Apologies: N Arnold, J Devenish, W Janssen Discussion: · Knowing your camera – Automatic Focussing. For almost all photos we want the picture to be in focus. There are various automatic focussing techniques used with some being more effective than others. The table below summarises the main Auto Focussing techniques:
with no overshoot. Still a problem in low light or lack of contrast. Two videos were shown to explain how the auto focussing systems work:
· August Photo Shoot: Outings Director, Chris, has organised an outing (on Wednesday 10th August) to the Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour to view the Wildlife Photographer of the year exhibition. Several of the PhIG members indicated that they will attend this outing and use it as a photo shoot opportunity (in addition to viewing the exhibition). In discussing whether to have a subject for the photo shoot it was agreed that we will leave it open so that members can chose whatever subject they like. Rather than leave the review of the photos until the September meeting it was agreed that we will hold an August meeting at the usual time on Monday 15th August with the photo critique being the photos taken at the Photo shoot. Graeme Deutscher will confirm whether he will host this meeting. Because of this change we need a subject for the September meeting and it was agreed that it should be ‘Springtime’. · Future Topics for discussion: Several topics were suggested for future meetings and we will plan to include the following:
Eight members submitted photos on the general topic of ‘Night Lights’ with some very good photos amongst them. The best photo from each of those who put in photos is shown below: Thanks again to Glen Moore for organising the venue. The next PhIG meeting will be held on Monday 18th July commencing at 10:00 am at the AIIM boardroom at the Innovation Campus, Squires way, courtesy Glen Moore.
Please let me know if you intend to come. The draft Agenda is as follows: Know Your Camera: The camera topic will be ‘Automatic Focusing’ : For almost all photos we want the picture to be in focus. There are various automatic focusing techniques used with some being more effective than others. I will show a couple of short videos on automatic focusing techniques and when auto focusing may not work. August Photo Shoot: Our Outings Director (Chris) is organising a visit to the Maritime Museum on 10th August to view the ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ exhibition but it also provides us with the possibility of making the outing a PhIG Photo shoot. We need to check how many would be interested and attending and to establish a topic for the shoot. It could be ‘Ships’ or, perhaps, just capturing photos of Probus members on an outing. Other suggestions welcome. Since this outing occurs early in the month, should we still hold a PhIG meeting on the following Monday, 15th? Tone Mapping: Following the Link Robert posted of some excellent photos (http://tinyurl.com/gvnl5mt) John Devenish analysed some of them and commented that many were ‘Tone Mapped’, a technique related to HDR. John provided a link to an interesting article: http://www.lightstalking.com/5-important-tone-mapping-tips/ which explained Tone Mapping. I suspect that none of us are familiar with this technique but it could be worth discussing when John returns. Other discussion Topics? Photo Critique: The photo topic is ‘Night Lights' where we will critique some of the night time photos taken at ‘Vivid’ (or at anywhere else). Night time photography often involves using the camera to its limits and it is somewhat more challenging to get a good night time picture using the available light – no flash. Could members please e-mail me their 5 photos and I will put them into a PowerPoint presentation to allow us to quickly go backwards and forwards between the photos. |
